1. Water – bring extra water beyond what you’ll need, along with a water filter or water treatment system.
2. Food – beyond the minimum expectation
3. Shelter -carry this at all times, can vary from a lightweight bivy to a 1 or 2+person tent
4. Navigation: map, compass, [GPS device], Satellite phone, extra batteries or battery pack, FarOut app on your phone
5. Headlamp: and extra batteries
6. First Aid: include foot care and insect repellent (as needed)
7. Sun Protection: sunscreen, sunglasses, clothing that covers commonly burned areas, sunhoodies, clothing with UPF
8. Knife (switchblade to cut bandages, camp meals, protection, etc.)
9. Fire: matches, lighter and tinder (lint is lightweight and highly flammable), or stove as appropriate
10. Extra clothing: layers, and in case of emergency if your other clothes get wet
11. Trekking poles: these are very helpful for balance and protecting your knees – especially on the downhills!
